Individuals in this class perform regimented work to meet requirements of Homeland Security regulations in regards to access control to prevent injury and loss of life by reducing or eliminating introduction of harmful agents or devices on Ferry Division vessels and/or facilities. This position monitors vehicular and pedestrian traffic, at facilities, to prevent unauthorized entry into restricted areas. Conducts and records screening of vehicles and passengers attempting to board ferries to prevent possible threats such as explosive devices intended to cause harm and injury to the traveling public, division employees and division equipment. As being a front-line employee, also will be required to serve as first responders in the event of an emergency while maintaining positive customer service contact. Security access control personnel will be expected to identify those who may intend to harm others without infringing on traveler privacy rights. Â Â
The position generally works shift work - 7 days on and 7 days off but schedule may be altered at management's discretion as well as assignment of routine daily duties.
This position will work at the HATTERAS FERRY OPERATIONS
LODGING IN STATE DORMS MAY BE PROVIDED DURING THE WORK SHIFT

- Basic knowledge of identifying improvised explosive devices and suspicious behavior.
- Skills in searching vehicles and baggage to detect harmful substances and devices.
- Skills in dealing with uncooperative travelers who refuse to provide identification or allow screening of their vehicle or bags.Â
- Experience in conducting rounds and sweeps to identify attempts to circumvent security measures.
